When most of us enter the world of fly fishing we think about that dry fly floating down a stream and a monster trout coming up and attacking it. Well that does happen from time to time. But after that we learn the real truth about fishing the western states. Most fish feed sub surface. They are eating nymphs in there larva or emerging stages.
There is no better feeling than hooking fish on your own fly's. There are many weeks that go by for me now when I never fish a fly I bought in the store.
If your going to be really productive in the Eastern Sierra fly fishing your going to learn how to nymph. From fishing this way we tend to lose a lot of fly's, which get expensive at 2 dollars a pop. So why not learn to tie some of the best nymphs we use. Here is a book i've found that covers most of the major patterns we use in the Eastern Sierra. If your just getting into fly tying this books will go over some of the basics for you, but it's also for the novice fly tier Just like most of the fly tiers around the country we all started out from reading books and learning the basics of how they are tied. I tie many of my own patterns these days and I'm always getting the question of how did you learn how to tie that fly. I always tell them I started out from reading books and watching video's. Good luck with your new adventures or learning new patterns.
