I had a gut feeling today that really paid off in a big way. The bite at Crowley has been shutting off on the indie mid day and there has nothing been going on during the evening hours. So I put my brain to work and figured out what I was going to do. I pride myself on being one of the best float tube fisherman around the area. I have spent months at a time in my tube and feel that true streamer fishing is becoming a thing of the past for most people fishing Crowley Lake. So I got in my tube for the first time this season this evening. 15 minutes after I got in the water and started kicking, I got the grab that sends a shock through your soul. The feeling of hooking that first big brown of the season filled me with excitement with a rush of adrenaline. This brown ended up being 23 inches and was just a massive fish. After admiring the fish for a few minutes I let him swim away. I casted back out and BAM! another brown tries to rip my rod right out of my hands. For those of you that look past the idea of streamer fishing these days, there is nothing more exciting that fishing a full sink line and feeling the power and aggressiveness that the browns have when inhaling your flies. So get in your tubes and start kicking!

Monday, June 7, 2010

What a great weekend we had. Temps in the high 70s to 80s. All the lake fishing around the area was really good and we will only see improving fishing from here on out. I fished Crowley on Saturday with Alex and we managed to land some nice fish. The only bad part was we fished through the tough part of the day. The bite right now gettings going in the early AM and slows down around noon and almost completely shuts down at 1. We were hooking fish under the indie about 12 to 14 feet deep and anywhere from right on the bottom to 3 feet off the bottom. The color of the midges has pretty much changed every single day. So make sure to change often to figure out what the fish want for that day. With all the warm tempatures we have had the spring run off is just insane. Hot Creek is now flowing and 208 cfs and I would recommend not even trying to fish it right now. The stream looks like a river of chocolate milk right now. The East walker is about the only fish able river right now and flows have stayed at 180. Every other creek and stream in the area is just blown out and over flowing the banks. I'll have some of the Crowley fish pictures up later tonight. Alex has been on some big fish right now and has 5 browns over 22 inches so far in the last 4 days. If your on your way up here and want to get in on this action at Crowley send me an email by clicking here Jason Fritz for more guide info and getting hooked up on these monster fish that are coming out of Crowley right now.

Fly Fishing Report

Are you tired of spending 2 dollars a pop on Fly's? Well I have found a site that offers fly's starting at .45 cents a pop and there are also some great deals for .24 cents. Most of the fly's are all generic and attractor patterns but if you want to stock up on your Adams and stimulators for the summer check it out. They have a pretty large variety of nymph patterns and streamers also. Premium fishing flies from 45 cents each.

Crowley Lake

Thursday, June 3, 2010

The bite is starting to pick up at Crowley. The fish are starting to suspend with warmer water temps. The fishing should only get better with the warmer temps scheduled for the weekend. Most of the fish are 2-4 feet off the bottom in 12-16 feet of water. Alligator, Sandy, and Big Hilton are the hot spots. Look for the bite to pick up at 9 am to 11 am. The bite slows at 11 am but you can still pick up some nice fish through out the whole day.

Keep your midge patterns with dark colors. Size 16 black, red and purple have been the best bottom fly and 14-16 gray or olive as your top bugs.

Convict Lake

.Sunday, May 16, 2010

Fishing has really improved lately with the warmer tempatures. There are plenty of hold over fish still left in the lake making for some exciting action. The best areas of the lake have been around the marina and the inlet of the lake. Fish full sink type 4 lines from your float tubes using the kick and twitch method. If you are not getting bit fish slower. Always I would fish around the marina and fan cast the whole area. When stripping your streamers back use a strip strip strip pause technique

Twin Lakes

Thursday, June 3, 2010

Twin Lakes is now almost all the way free of ice. But fishing has been really poor. I haven't heard anybody say that they have even hooked fish. For the best fishing you will need to fish up near the water fall. The lower lake has just been a ghost town.

Gull Lake

Alright reports from the lake have came in now. The lake is about 60 to 70% thawed on the marina side. The marina boats have been breaking up the ice as fast as they can right now.

There won't be much shore line fishing in the lake. It will limited to right from the marina and the spots on the other side of the lake near the rocks. So I would recommend fishing either from a boat, float tube or kayak.

Silver Lake

Monday, May 10, 2010

The Lake is now free of ice. Haven't heard much on the way of fly fishing. The lake just iced off this week so that is keeping most of the float tubers off the water right now. If you want to rough the cold water I would fish around the out let of the lake. Fishing type 4 full sink lines either casting and stripping very slow or use the kick and twitch method.

Grant Lake

Monday, May 10, 2010

The Lake is now ice free. The water is still very cold and haven't heard any reports from fly fishermen. Best areas to start off when fishing from your float tubes would be the inlet of the lake or down the steep banks near the launch ramp. Also try fishing the inlet near the damn. Use full sink lines between 4 and type 6 and fish very slow.

Monday, May 10, 2010

ICE FREE. The lake is extremely low. We drove by the lake yesterday and the launch ramp is all the way out of the water. The end of the ramp is almost 50 yards from the water. I would think about holding off right now tell the water rises a little. If your headed hear concentrate fishing from your float tubes near the inlet. Also I would try fishing the stream coming into the lake.

Bridge Port Reservoir

Tuesday, May 4, 2010

The fishing at the reservoir has been pretty slow for the fly guys. Fish are in 8 to 15 feet of water and most of them have been suspended near steeper banks. Midging has been off and on and no real grab going yet. Best way to hook fish right now would be from a float ube with a type 4 or 5 full sink line using the kick and twitch method. You are going to have to cover water to find the fish that want to eat, but once you find them there are some decent size fish to hook right now. With the warmer wither this week we have hopes that the lake will improve.

Pleasant Valley Reservoir

I went tubing in PVR the other morning and at first I didn't get one grab. I fished the straight-away just past the river section all the way down until the reservoir proper (first big bend). The pump station was calm, the water seemed clear to about 5-7 feet and there was no surface activity to speak of. I fished many different pattern, colors, depths and retrieve cadences with nothing taking my presentation. About 9am the bite took off with almost every cast either a grab or a fish on. All nice fish between 13-16 inches, lot's of fight, chunky in sature and a few getting airborne. All colors and patterns (wolly buggers, mohair leeches) worked. They weren't picky! In an hour and a half i caught 13 nice fish and then the water became very murky due to the power station pumping water. The bite shutdown at that point.

Intake 2 seemed to fish pretty good for the most part. Most of the fish were on the smaller side, but the guys were hooking a decent number of fish from the float tubes. Wooley Buggers seemed to be the hot ticket in any shape and color. One of the TWR followers sent in a quick report about his day fishing. Ken from bishop landed 11 fish in the morning and 12 that afternoon.

Well the creek finally saw its worst day of fishing all season today. The spring run off really hammered this place today and the flows jumped up around 26 csf's. The water looks like a raging river of chocolate milk right now and it will take a few days for it to clean out and be fish able again.

Upper Owens River

Sunday, May 16, 2010

The flow on the Upper Owens River has been jumping around a lot lately.  But has been mostly around 55-60 csf.  This is a pretty low flow for this river but it is actually fishing well.  There are quite a few fish that have been pushing in from Crowley Lake and they are of decent size.  Fish are scattered so when fishing the Owens the key is to cover a lot of water.  Just walk and keep your eyes open for fish moving.  You can run streamer patters and fish downstream hitting bends and fast water.  This is a great way to cover water.  If you are throwing nymph rigs than the key is to run something bright and flashy as your point fly and put more natural patterns  below that.  Stuff like cased caddis, caddis emerges, midges, beatis or stonefly nymphs.  Just remember not to spend to much time in one spot if you are not getting strikes. Be on the lookout for the water to be rising soon.

Well if you don't mind the crowds and I mean CROWDS! this place can be fun to catch some of the bigger hold overs. The banks here are lined with 100s of anglers casting in every direction. So it will be extremely tough for the opener but sometimes can be rewarding.

East Walker River

Thursday, June 3, 2010

The bite at the East Walker is good but the crowds are bad. Flows are just about perfect at 180 cfs with the water temps at 55 degrees. There are a ton of fish over 16 inches being caught. The one bad this is that fish are feeding on a medley of insects from midges to caddis. The hatches are midges in the morning, beatis in the afternoon and caddis in the evening.

Lower Owens Gorge This is always the place to go to get away from the crowds. This fishing here has really been good and there are some great BWO hatches coming off mid day and a decent caddis hatch coming off later in the afternoon. Be careful of the stinging neddles though as they are starting to pop up every where along the creek. Fishing here is always pretty simple. Fish a dry dropper combo. I would fish a stimulator as your dry to start off with a size 18 or 20 midge as your dropper. You can fish all sorts of different attractor type dry's. When you see the BWO's come off switch over to one of those. Most of your fish are going to be in the 8 to 12 inch range with bigger fish being around 14 to 16 inches.

The Lower Owens is flowing at 540 cfs. You will need to use a ton of weight to get down to the fish. Midges and Beatis will be hatching in the morning. Caddis and Midges in the afternoon. The Beatis are hatching at 10-12 and the Caddis show up at 1-4. A few fish are coming up to the surface but most are staying near the bottom. You will need at least 2-4 AB shots to get down to the bottom. 18-20 Midges patterns, 18-20 Mayfly nymphs or emergers and 14-16 Olive or Gray Caddis Pupa and dries. Mammoth Lakes Area Reports Bait and Lures

Lake Marry

Ideal for ice fishing guys! The best areas are always around the inlets and outlets of this lake. If you have an auger and want to make your own holes I would start by the inlet from lake George. If you haven't ice fished before this can be a ton of fun for easy limits. Go up in the evening of the opener or even the next day and there will be holes all over the lake for easy picking. The best tactic is to use a trout trap tipped with either a night crawler piece or a salmon egg. Let it sink to the bottom then reel up a couple cranks and gently jig it in 3 inch shakes. For all the tackle and gear you need for ice fishing go into Rick's Sports for more info.

GET OUT HERE AND TRY THIS!

Trout teaser - any of the brighter colors work well. Make sure to tip them with a pinch of night crawler. Added sent always helps too.

Jig spoons

Thomas buoyant work well.
also try fishing Lip Rippers and Berkeley power worms.

Same as Lake Marry for the report on how to fish.

Find your holes in the ice and go hook some fish.

STAY OFF THE LAKE! The ice is now rotten all over the lake and is breaking up pretty dang fast! We should be ice free for Memorial day weekend. There are small sections on the lake that have open water that can be really good at times. Below the foot bridge infront of Tamarack lodge can be really good and also underneath the water fall. Fish Panther Martins and Trout Teasers for your best results. Also it would be a good time to fish a fly and a bubble set up.

Fly and a bubble with a wooly bugger green or black.

Thomas Buoyant - red and gold

Lip rippers - green, orange, yellow

Mammoth Creek

Sunday, May 16, 2010

The Creek is pretty high right now. Most people are getting 3 or 4 fish a day and limits can be tough at times. The best ways to fish right now are small spinners like panther martins or salmon eggs. Also try site fishing with trout teasers with some scent on them.

Power bait - chunky cheese, rainbow, garlic and salmon egg sent.
Salmon Eggs
Rooster Tails
Panther Martins

Upper Owens River

Sunday, May 16, 2010

The river has been fishing pretty good for most spin anglers lately. The guys doing the best are working small spinners in the deeper runs. There a good amounts of Crowley fish coming into the river right now also. Please make sure to respect the fishery and only keep what you can eat. The spawners are what make the Upper O and Crowley such a great fishery.

Floating rapalas - f3s and f5s, silver and gold, rainbow, brown trout, and perch pattern.

The fishing on Crowley has been all over the place.  We did have some warmer days this week and it seems to have helped the fishing a bit.  For the guys trolling the ticket has been about 25-30 feet of water and 4-6 colors.  The Tasmanian Devils have still be the lure of choice for most people.  Running a pattern form Pelican Point over to Sandy Point and then towards Stormy Flats has been best.  I talked with people that have been trolling different areas with some success but the Pelican to Sandy loop seems to be the ticket.  For those of you that are Bait Fisherman I would be concentrating on the quick drop offs.  The same thing goes for where the fish will be located.  25-30 feet of water and suspended in about 16- 20 feet.  With that being said you would want to run longer than average leaders ranging from 4-6 feet.  Switch it up with your baits till you find what is working for that day.  Use various power baits and and inflated worms.  Thing are on the up and I am going to have to say that Crowley should be fishing pretty good within the next few weeks.

Convict Lake

Sunday, May 16, 2010

Convict has been fishing inconsistent for a lot of people.  It is hard to give a report for the last week due to the fact that some groups have been doing pretty well and others would not say that at all.  It seem to me that the average for most groups has been 1-2 fish per hour and that is coming from the groups that have been doing better.  Right now the key for bait fisherman is SCENT.  If you are fishing off the bottom then you need to be running fairly long leaders ranging from 3-6 feet and make sure that you are putting scent on everything.  Gulp baits are a good thing to start with because they are already so potent. But you must add a little something extra on whatever it may be that you are fishing with.  Another helpful tip is to keep moving.  If you spend more than 30 min in one spot without a strike then you should be moving down shore.  Sometimes all it takes is moving 30-40 yards away to find the fish.  That is the key, you need to find the fish, they won't find you.

Gull Lake Gull lake is about 60 t0 70% defrosted and the marina has been breaking up the ice as best they can. There will not be much shore fishing here so you are going to need to either fish from a boat, float tube or kayak. The ice is all hanging on the right hand side of the lake looking at the lake from the marina. Good luck guys and let me know how you do?

Silver Lake

Sunday, May 9, 2010

Fishing is finally getting under way at Silver Lake; after the ice has all gone away.  We had several nice fish caught this week from shore and from boats.  The new Salmon Egg Glitter Power Bait and Salmon Peach Power Bait has been working well from shore, as well as worms.  From boats, trolling a Tasmanian Devil (anything Pink) or a Rapala have been working very well also.  we are excited about the lake finally being ice free and are looking forward to a great season of fishing on Silver Lake.

The water is extremely cold and the fish are suspending the water column. Trolling is the best way to get the suspended fish to bite. You want to be 12-20 feet down off Rocky Point or By the damn. Kastmasters, Rapalas and Needlefish in Gold, Red or Frog will do the trick.
